Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice Group, John L. Ambrogi understands that a robust intellectual property portfolio can provide competitive advantages, define and distinguish a company in the marketplace, or generate a lucrative revenue source. But John also knows that the value of these assets can be illusory if not accompanied by vigilant protection, assertive advocacy, and practical, real-world strategies.

That is why clients in a diverse range of industries look to John to evaluate, obtain, and enforce their rights relating to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. John’s efforts focus on helping his clients maximize the benefits that flow from these assets while minimizing the risk posed by infringement or other acts that threaten those benefits. He prides himself on finding creative solutions and obtaining cost-effective and positive outcomes that achieve his clients’ objectives.

A seasoned litigator, John protects and advances his clients’ interests in federal and state courts, proceedings in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and other domestic and international forums. John performs meticulous due diligence and evaluation of IP assets, and counsels clients on e-commerce issues, IP audits/transfers, and IP clearances. He drafts sound and thorough opinion letters and clearance opinions, and negotiates intellectual property agreements, including letters of intent, consulting and employment agreements, non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), and the sale and licensing of Intellectual Property assets.

John has extensive experience defending against charges of patent, copyright and trademark infringement, protecting trade secrets, advising clients regarding domain name and internet-related issues, and counseling on anti-counterfeiting programs. He also administers and negotiates licenses and assists clients with the intellectual property aspects of business acquisitions, mergers, and takeovers.

After attending Loyola University Chicago, John earned his law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He is active in several professional organizations, and regularly volunteers at the Greater Chicago Food Depository as well as Hope House, which provides a fully home-cooked meal once a month to men going through drug and alcohol rehab.

When not serving his clients or his community, John likes to spend his time enjoying good food with family and friends, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.
